Foot Care

The main responsibility for the ongoing health and foot care of any person lies with that person themselves. While Chiropodists form the last line of defence against the more serious foot disorders and complaints, and form a necessary part of a Diabetic's or Arthritis sufferer’s regular health regime, many conditions can be identified early by regular checks and foot care that anyone can conduct themselves.

Any condition caught early stands a much better chance of successful treatment. In addition, a daily foot care routine will lessen the chance of problems arising in the first place.

Glossop Chiropody, foot care A regular foot care routine will take up a little of your time and may save you time, money and pain in the future. Feet should be checked every day for cuts, swelling, blisters and red spots, and by daily washing and thorough drying, many foot complaints can be avoided.

To avoid the build up of hard skin and callouses, the skin on the foot can be kept soft by using a pumice stone and moisturising, although using lotions between the toes is not recommended. In addition, walking barefoot is an invitation for hard skin, minor accidents and major infections and so wearing shoes and socks at all times is recommended.

Toenails should be trimmed regularly, and edges filed with a nail file, and to avoid in-growing toenails they should be cut straight across. Well fitted comfortable shoes will also help minimise problems with both your feet and nails. Make sure the lining of shoes is smooth too with no parts that dig into your feet or toes.

Extremes in temperature are best avoided for feet. Wear shoes when walking on hot sand or ground and don’t put your feet in very hot water. Using hot water bottles, electric blankets or heating pads on your feet is also best avoided since burns can occur quickly, without realising it.

Rather, improve your circulation by wiggling your toes, avoiding sitting cross legged for long periods, refraining from smoking and moving your ankles up and down when sitting. If you set aside a short time every day to looking after your feet, they will look after you in the years to come.
