Corns are callouses which occur on the foot. Usually found on the top of the toes, they can occur anywhere on the foot, including the soles and between the toes. Corns are caused by continued pressure on an area of skin on the part of the foot exposed to the pressure. As a response, the body grows more layers of skin as a form of protection, resulting in a small, hard surface area of dead skin, which is the corn.

The kind of excessive pressure which results in corns usually comes from tight shoes, or seams and stitching inside the shoes which rubs on a particular area of the foot. They can also be caused by deformed toes, walking abnormalities, and bunions. Corns are most common in women.
Corns left untreated can appear unsightly and cause significant discomfort. The effects of a corn can be treated by regular soaking of the feet which softens the hard tissue, followed by rubbing the affected area with a pumice stone. This will soften the skin and reduce the size of the corn. Donut-shaped padded rings to alleviate the pressure on the area can also be bought from Chemists and Pharmacists.

Corns are best prevented in the first place and this is achieved by avoiding the extra pressures on feet which cause them. Primarily that would be wearing correctly fitted shoes but also when taking part in sports, wearing thick socks designed for the purpose. When wearing socks which are particularly thick it is also advisable to wear a larger shoe size to accommodate them.
