Athletes Foot

Glossop Chripody, illness Athletes foot derives its name from the conditions which give rise to the ailment, namely the environments a person would be as a result of sports or activity and the conditions of the feet inside sports footwear. It is not confined to athletes however and does affect anyone whose feet are exposed to damp, warm conditions.

Athletes foot is caused by a fungal infection which develops below the skin, usually between the toes.

If left untreated the infection can spread to the soles of the feet and toenails and, through contaminated bed sheets and scratching, other parts of the body.

The condition is characterised by scaling of the skin between the toes, which becomes progressively moist. Flaking and peeling of the skin occurs and blisters can appear. New skin underneath appears red, inflamed, and sore, with an increase in burning sensation and itching as the infection spreads.

Humid environments provide excellent breeding grounds for athletes foot and so changing rooms, locker rooms, swimming pools and showers are common sources of infection. Not changing socks regularly and having naturally sweaty feet compound the problem.

Treatment for athletes foot is readily available from the Chemist or Pharmacist and is usually in the form of a anti-fungal powders and creams. Athletes foot is however easily controlled and prevented by a simple health and cleanliness regime. Feet should be washed daily and dried thoroughly, especially after any strenuous activity. Socks and shoes changed regularly to avoid the build up of moisture.
